Open your phone. Go to photos. The count is probably four digits. It might be five.
Now scroll. How many of those pictures have anything with them that explains what they are?
Almost none. The file is called IMG_4831.HEIC. The hidden data has a timestamp, and often a set of coordinates. It does not say who is in the picture, what the occasion was, why anyone bothered to take it, or why you never deleted it. The image is intact. The meaning is missing.
Old photographs had the identical problem, and people solved it the way people solve things slowly and by accident: they wrote on the back. A printed photograph had a blank reverse, and onto that blank reverse went a ballpoint line. "Christmas 1962 — left to right: Uncle Ray, Mom, me, Grandma." Sometimes just a name. Sometimes a joke. Before that, in the era of the album, the writing was done in white ink directly under the mounted print, with a steadier hand and often a title — the family album of 1910 was a curated document, with captions, and somebody chose every picture in it.
The handwriting is the point. It tells you not only who, but who cared enough to write it down, and the two are not always the same person. It also gives you something the picture cannot: which moment the family thought was worth keeping. Birthday, not Tuesday. Departure, not arrival.
We take more photographs than any people who have ever lived. One estimate puts the number of photographs taken worldwide in a single recent year at over a trillion — the overwhelming majority of them on phones, and the overwhelming majority of them never printed, never captioned, never seen twice. In 2019, MySpace announced that during a server migration it had lost twelve years of user uploads, millions of files, gone. In 2017, when Photobucket changed its terms, images that had been embedded across the web for a decade were replaced overnight with a graphic telling the account holder to pay up. Those are the ordinary failure modes: a company changes its mind, and a decade of pictures stops existing. The shoebox was a bad archive. It was a better archive than this.
And even when the file survives, the file is not the memory. The camera records what was in front of the lens. It does not record that this was the last summer at the house, that the man on the left died in March, that the reason you took this particular picture was that your daughter had just said something funny and you wanted to remember her face at that exact age. None of that is in the file. All of it was in you, in that second, and none of it was written down.
Here is the thing about a photograph with no caption. It does not become nothing. It becomes generic. Forty years from now, someone scrolling through it will see a family — a man in a lawn chair, a child mid-laugh, a kitchen with yellow cabinets — and will register it the way you register a stock photo: as an example of a thing. The faces will be "people." The people will have been specific. Someone knew that man's voice, and the exact way he cleared his throat.
The distance between "an old photo of some family" and "my great-great-grandmother, who laughed like this" is one line of text. That is the entire gap. It is smaller than anyone expects, and nobody fills it, because right now you are the only person who can — and right now it does not feel urgent.
So do a small thing today. Not twelve thousand. Ten.
Pick ten photographs. For each one, write one sentence: who is in it, where it was, and why you kept it. Then put that text somewhere that does not depend on a company's pricing page — a file, an email to yourself, a printed page in the box. Ten lines is enough to turn a camera roll into a record.
In the year 3026, whoever finds your pictures will be deciding whether those faces are people or decoration. You are the last one who knows. Write the line.
