For roughly four and a half centuries, on a narrow street in the East End of London, bells were cast in the same building. The Whitechapel Bell Foundry is listed by Guinness as the oldest manufacturing company in Britain, operating continuously from the sixteenth century. It closed in June 2020.
The bells it made are everywhere. In 1752 it cast the Liberty Bell, which cracked on its first test ring in Philadelphia. In 1858 it cast the great bell for the clock tower at the Houses of Parliament — the one the world calls Big Ben, though strictly that is the name of the bell, not the tower. It too cracked, within two months, and was repaired and rotated so the crack would never meet the hammer. That crack is still there. The sound of Big Ben is the sound of a damaged bell.
Casting a bell is not like casting anything else. The shape has to be right to within a fraction of a percent, because the profile determines which overtones survive and which cancel out. The metal — traditionally a bronze of about seventy-seven parts copper to twenty-three parts tin — must be at the right temperature when poured, in a mould made from loam and horse manure, layered and dried over weeks. Then the bell is tuned by cutting metal off the inside on a lathe, and it is struck repeatedly and listened to by people who have spent their working lives listening.
It is the listening that is hardest to transfer. A tuner works by ear against a reference, shaving away fractions of a millimetre and then striking the bell again. The difference between a bell that is right and one that is nearly right is not visible. It exists only in the sound, and in the judgement of a person who has heard thousands.
The men who did this were called bell founders, and the trade passed down. The last master of Whitechapel learned from the man before him, who learned from the man before that, back through a chain of hands reaching into the 1500s. Alongside the great bells, the foundry also made handbells — thousands of them a year, tuned in sets, shipped to choirs and schools around the world. That line of work survived on a steady, unglamorous demand that kept the furnaces lit.
It closed for reasons that had nothing to do with demand. There is still work: church bells, restoration, handbells. The building was worth more than the business. In 2017 it was sold to a company that announced plans to convert it, and the site's future has been fought over in planning hearings and public inquiries ever since, with heritage groups arguing that a working foundry was itself the asset and a hotel would preserve only the shell. Some of the former craftsmen moved to a foundry in the Netherlands. The last bell cast at Whitechapel was struck once and then the furnaces went cold.
The part worth holding on to is not nostalgia for bells. It is what a trade like that represents: a body of knowledge that existed nowhere but in the hands and ears of a small number of people, transmitted by apprenticeship over twenty generations, and unable to be written down well enough to survive on paper alone. You can photograph a workshop. You can archive the moulds. You cannot archive the moment a tuner decides that a bell is finished.
When that kind of chain breaks, nothing is destroyed. Nothing is even lost, exactly, because it was never in one place. It simply stops. And the world goes on with the bells it already has, and mostly does not notice that the ability to make another one left the room.
