On the afternoon of 20 August 1966, a boy flying a kite on a hillside above Niterói, across the bay from Rio de Janeiro, came across two men lying on their backs in a clearing.
They were dead. They were also dressed for an office: suits, ties, polished shoes. Over each man's eyes was a mask made of lead — rough, home-made, the kind sold in Brazil at the time to people who believed lead could shield them from radiation.
Beside them, neatly arranged, were a notebook, a towel, a bottle of water, and a small amount of cash. Nothing had been stolen. There were no signs of a struggle, no footprints suggesting anyone else had been up there, and no injuries on either body.
The two men were identified as Manoel Pereira da Cruz and Miguel José Viana, both in their thirties, both from the town of Campos dos Goytacazes, and both electronics technicians who repaired radios and televisions and sold parts. Twenty-four hours earlier, a shopkeeper in Niterói had sold them a raincoat and a bottle of water. He remembered them because they had seemed calm and had asked for the water to be kept cold.
Inside the notebook were written instructions in Portuguese. In translation they run roughly: wait at the agreed place at 16:30; at 18:30 swallow the capsules; after the effect, protect the metals; wait for the signal.
That is the whole document. No names, no explanation of what the capsules were, no indication of what the signal was supposed to be or who would send it.
The autopsy found no poison in their stomachs and no poison in their blood. There was no sign of violence. The cause of death was recorded, in the end, as undetermined. The lead masks were never explained by any official finding, and neither was the notebook.
What the police learned afterwards is thin but strange. Both men belonged to a small group in Campos that met to discuss spiritualism, life after death, and — according to the accounts given later by people who knew them — the possibility of contact with beings from elsewhere. One investigator reportedly suggested the capsules mentioned in the notebook might have been intended not to kill them but to sharpen their perception, or to induce a state the group believed would allow contact. That suggestion has never been verified.
There have been many theories since. A double suicide, staged with the theatre of an awaiting signal. An accidental poisoning after taking something they believed was harmless. A con trick that went wrong, in which a third person persuaded them to perform a ritual and then left them. And, of course, the one that has kept the case popular for six decades: that the two technicians went up that hill in suits because they believed something was going to arrive, and that whatever they were waiting for did not come, or came and took them.
Nothing about the scene fits neatly. People who intend to kill themselves do not normally put on lead masks and a business suit and walk up a hill carrying a notebook that says wait for the signal. And people who intend to survive do not leave the same notebook behind.
Almost sixty years later, both men are still on that hill in the only way that matters to a case like this: unnamed in their intentions. We know their names, their jobs, their addresses. We do not know what they expected to happen at 18:30.
A detail that has never been adequately accounted for is the timeline. The notebook says 16:30, wait; 18:30, swallow the capsules. The men had been seen buying the raincoat and the water the day before. That means they travelled from Campos to Niterói — a journey of several hours — and then walked up a hill, on a schedule they had written down for themselves in advance. Whatever was supposed to happen at 18:30 had been planned at least a day earlier, and possibly much longer.
And the lead. Lead is heavy and awkward, and these masks were home-made. Nobody puts two lead eye masks into a bag for an ordinary walk in the woods.
That is a specific kind of absence. They wrote down instructions for themselves — and left out the only part anyone would want to know.
