Marie Tharp Drew the Ocean Floor and Was Not Allowed on the Ship

In 1957, a young geologist named Marie Tharp was working in a basement office at Columbia University, drawing. She had a drafting table, a set of pens, and stacks of raw data sent back from research ships she was not permitted to board. Her job was to turn those numbers into pictures. What she drew, over the following two decades, changed what humanity understood the planet to be.

Tharp was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, in 1920. Her father worked for the United States Department of Agriculture, mapping soils, and he took her with him into the field, teaching her to read a landscape. She earned a degree in music and another in geology, then two master's degrees, one in geology and one in mathematics. In 1948 she moved to New York to take a job as a drafting technician at the Lamont Geological Observatory, where she was the first woman the institution had hired for scientific work.

At Lamont, she met Bruce Heezen, a graduate student who was collecting echo-sounding data from the Atlantic. Ships crossing the ocean sent sound pulses downward and timed the echo off the seafloor. Line by line, crossing by crossing, those timings produced a profile of a landscape no human being had ever seen. Tharp's task was to take the numbers and draw the shape of the bottom of the ocean.

There was one immediate problem. In the 1950s, women were not allowed aboard the Lamont research vessels. It was considered bad luck, and it was simply the rule. Tharp has said that she was told she could not go to sea because it would disrupt the men. So she stayed ashore, in the basement, and worked from the data — which meant, in practice, that she was the only person who could see the whole picture at once. The men at sea collected lines. She assembled the world.

By the early 1950s she had found something. In the middle of the Atlantic, along the ridge that splits the ocean floor, there was a continuous valley — a rift, running down the centre of the entire ridge system. She showed it to Heezen and suggested what it meant: if the seafloor was spreading apart along that rift, then the continents on either side were moving away from each other. That was continental drift, the idea Alfred Wegener had proposed in 1912 and which most geologists had spent forty years dismissing as nonsense.

Heezen was not persuaded. He told her it was impossible. He called it, in the recollection she later gave in interviews, "girl talk" — meaning speculation, not science.

Tharp kept drawing. She and Heezen went on to publish, in 1977, the first comprehensive map of the ocean floor, compiled from thousands of sonar profiles and rendered as a painted panorama by the cartographic artist Heinrich Berann. It showed the Mid-Atlantic Ridge with its central rift, and the fractures that cut across it, and the trenches, and the seamounts. It looked, for the first time, like a place. It was a rendering of the largest single feature on the surface of the Earth, and until that moment nobody had seen it.

The map became one of the most reproduced scientific images of the twentieth century. It is in textbooks. Versions of it hang in classrooms. And its acceptance of seafloor spreading helped carry continental drift into the mainstream, where it became plate tectonics — the framework on which all of modern geology rests.

Heezen died in 1977, at sea, aboard a research vessel, of a heart attack. After his death, Tharp continued the work. She completed a second, more detailed map in 1997, this time digitally, at the age of seventy-seven. Recognition came late and came from the institutions that had once kept her ashore: a heritage award from Lamont, and an award from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for women in science and engineering. She died in 2006, in Nyack, New York, at the age of eighty-six.

There is a particular kind of credit that gets assigned late and incompletely. Tharp's name appeared on maps that carried Heezen's first, and for many years the standard account was that she was a technician who assisted him. The record is clear that she made the interpretive leap, argued for it against her own supervisor, and drew the evidence that proved it. The rift valley she found in the data is the reason the theory she was told to stop talking about is now the foundation of the field.

She never went to sea. She saw more of the ocean floor than anyone who ever did.

The maps she drew describe a world in motion at a speed of a few centimetres a year — about the rate a fingernail grows. It is slow enough that no human life is long enough to perceive it, and fast enough that in a hundred million years the Atlantic will be wider than the Pacific is now. She measured something no one can feel, and made it visible.
