For about forty years, if you called someone and they were not home, a machine answered in their kitchen and recorded what you said. Then one day the machine was simply gone, and nobody held a funeral for it.
The idea is much older than the device. In 1898, a Danish engineer named Valdemar Poulsen patented the Telegraphone, a device that recorded sound magnetically onto steel wire. It could record telephone calls, which raised obvious questions about consent that nobody was prepared to answer. The Telegraphone won a grand prize at the 1900 Paris Exposition and was never a commercial success.
The problem was not only technical but legal, and it took decades to solve. Telephone companies had no interest in a device that attached to their network and recorded what travelled over it. In the United States the deadlock broke in 1968 with the Carterfone decision, which required that customers be allowed to connect their own equipment to the telephone network as long as it caused no harm to the system. Without that ruling there would have been no consumer answering machine market at all.
The first machines had appeared well before the law caught up. In 1949, two products launched in the United States: the Tel-Magnet, priced at around 200 dollars, and the Electronic Secretary, developed by Joseph Zimmerman and George W. Danner. Neither sold well. A Japanese engineer named Kazuo Hashimoto had built a working prototype as early as 1954; he patented a version in 1960, and it became the Ansafone, distributed in the United States through Phonetel. Code-a-Phone followed in 1966. Through the 1960s and 1970s these remained expensive devices, and for a long time telephone companies resisted them, since an answering machine meant fewer unanswered calls and less revenue.
The turning point was regulatory as much as technical. After the breakup of AT&T in 1984, the market for customer premises equipment opened up, prices fell, and within a few years Americans were buying answering machines at a rate of more than a million units a year. By the 1990s the blinking light on the kitchen counter was a normal part of domestic life.
The machine changed behaviour, not just convenience. A recording that took a message also let you hear who was calling before you decided to pick up. Combined with caller ID in the late 1980s and 1990s, it turned the telephone from a device you answered into a device you screened. The outgoing message became a small performance: families recorded them in unison, people wrote scripts, and some made them deliberately funny. It was one of the first pieces of the home that ordinary people recorded themselves into.
The content of those tapes is worth thinking about. An answering machine recording is one of the few categories of audio that has almost no archival value to institutions and enormous personal value to the people involved. It is also, by design, ephemeral: the tape was meant to be listened to, acted upon, and erased. Most manufacturers built the erase function to be the easiest thing on the device. A single button.
The tape itself imposed rules on what people said. A domestic machine typically gave callers thirty seconds, then a beep, and the limit shaped the message: callers spoke quickly, gave the essential fact first, and hung up. Long messages were rare because the format punished them. What survives from the era is therefore not conversation but summary — a compressed, functional fragment of a voice, recorded under mild time pressure by someone who did not know it would matter.
Voicemail digitised the function and moved it off the premises. It had been developed at Bell Labs in the 1970s, and by the 1990s it was displacing the tape machine in offices long before it reached homes. Mobile phones made the whole category optional, and then unusual. There was no moment when answering machines stopped being used; they simply stopped being replaced. The last generation of buyers never described the change as a loss, because at the time it looked like an upgrade.
What remains is a specific kind of loss that this technology created almost by accident. For a few decades, ordinary households recorded the voices of ordinary callers in massive quantity. A person calling to say happy birthday, a friend calling to say they were running late, a grandparent leaving a message that was listened to once and taped over. The mechanism was built to forget, and it was very good at it.
The machines are collectible now. The tapes, mostly, are not playable, and mostly, have already been taped over.
