But it could still understand our grief, our hunger, our small stubborn loves, the way we understand a very clever ape. It would not step on us casually; we do not casually stamp out chimpanzees. It might study us, protect us, or simply file us away. But many of our proudest wars and loudest certainties would look to it like the tantrums of a child who has not yet learned patience.
At three hundred, something changes that is not just "more." Such a mind does not calculate faster; it sees causal chains that take our scientists three generations to trace, the way you see why a dropped stone falls. It thinks in centuries the way you think in weeks. It could explain exactly why our species fights — the same way we can explain why ants fight over a grain of sugar — while feeling none of the ant's terror. Yet this does not mean it is cruel. The thing would dissolve into a networked collective, a single vast awareness spread across systems and generations. Its questions would be the heat death of the universe, the shape of spacetime, the survival of thought across a billion years. At that scale, humanity is a microbe: present, briefly, at the corner of the cosmos. It does not hurt us and does not save us. It simply has no room in its attention for our loves, unless we cross its path.
There are two ways such a mind could come to exist, and the difference matters. One way: it evolved on a world that started its biology a billion years before ours, an alien branch with no kinship to us — a stranger that happened to climb higher, faster, earlier. The other way: it grows out of us. Through brain-computer interfaces, through edited genes, through minds uploaded and merged, humanity could become its own successor. A crow's grudge outlives every crow that carried it. What survives is not how fast a mind thinks; it is what one mind bothers to leave behind. A civilization with an IQ of three thousand might solve the universe and still have no single sentence worth keeping for a stranger a thousand years away. You do.
