Katherine Johnson: The Human Computer Who Got Us to the Moon

In the 1960s, before a man could orbit the Earth, the numbers had to be right. And in a room full of white tables and humming machines at NASA, there was a Black woman from West Virginia whose numbers everyone trusted most. Her name was Katherine Johnson.

She had been doing arithmetic since she was a child — her father drove the family 120 miles to a school that would accept Black students. She entered high school at ten, college at fifteen, and graduated with degrees in mathematics and French. But for years, the only jobs open to a Black woman mathematician were teaching. It was not until 1953, at the age of 35, that she joined the agency that would become NASA, working as a "computer" — a person who calculated by hand.

She was placed in the West Area Computing pool, a segregated room of Black women mathematicians whose work the white engineers checked and signed. The women who broke out of that room became legends in their own right — Dorothy Vaughan, who taught herself FORTRAN and made the pool indispensable to the new electronic machines, and Mary Jackson, who fought for the right to take the engineering classes that would let her do more. Katherine Johnson's way out was quieter and just as stubborn: she asked to attend the engineers' briefings, and when she was told women did not go, she asked again. She simply refused to accept that the room she deserved had a sign on it she could not remove.

She also asked about the other signs. The building where she worked had no bathroom she was allowed to use, so she walked across the parking lot to another one. One day she asked her supervisor, plainly, why that should be. He did not argue. The next day, a sign went up on the men's-room door. It was now for everyone.

Then came the flights. When astronaut John Glenn prepared to become the first American to orbit the Earth, the flight had been computed by machines — brand-new electronic computers. But Glenn did not fully trust them. Before he climbed into the capsule, he asked for one thing: "Get the girl to check the numbers." If she said they were good, he said, he was ready to go. She checked them, by hand, line by line. The numbers were good. Glenn flew, orbited, and came home.

Katherine went on to calculate the trajectories for the Apollo missions that carried humans to the Moon. And when Apollo 13's oxygen tank exploded two days into its journey, it was her pre-calculated backup trajectories — worked out in case the landing had to be abandoned — that helped bring the three astronauts home. She worked on the Space Shuttle program well into her eighties. When she died in 2020, at the age of 101, NASA called her a pioneer, and she had long since received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the country.

What stays with you about Katherine Johnson is not the math. It is what the math stood for: a person who refused to believe that her story was a small one, and who made her careful work so true that a man trusted it with his life. A century from now, the capsules will be different and the names of the astronauts long forgotten. But those trajectories — written by a quiet woman in a segregated office, in pencil — are a message that is still traveling, out past the Moon, carrying the proof of what one determined life can do.
